Nick’s original idea, to produce rich, handsome reds without an extravagant price tag, remains true today. Though he secreted his first generation of desirable shiraz for a close coterie of friends and family, he couldn’t contain his renowned entrepreneurial spirit and four years later expanded his vineyard holdings to the south, acquiring the renowned Bass Hill Vineyard west of the Auburn township, developing with local winemakers an impressive range of regionally true, traditional and contemporary Clare wines.
After four decades in real estate and finance, Nick has chosen to focus comprehensively on Georges Family Winegrowers with son Alex working side by side in marketing and sales. With their motto firmly established – “Great wine comes from great fruit” – they uphold best practices in their vineyards, and from the 2020 vintage have engaged senior Tapanappa winemaker Con Moshos to create a premium collection of both pristine white and expressive red wines.
Their connection to the Clare Valley, and especially Auburn, deepened in 2019 when Georges attained the historic Koonowla property including further quality vineyards, its astounding 19thcentury gravity winery, and glorious grounds that offer an exciting venue for events and cellar door experiences.
